Curriculum

PGY-I

Genesys offers a challenging introductory year in the Emergency Medicine Residency. At the same time it maintains the uniqueness of the traditional internship program. We feel this best provides the physician in training for a well rounded experience in Emergency Medicine. The program includes rotations in: Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Anesthesiology, Surgical Subspecialties, General Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Pulmonology, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Internal Medicine Subspecialties, General Surgery.

PGY-II

In this year EM Resident will experience rotations in the Emergency Department, EMS, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Ortho-Neuro ICU, Emergency Services Transition Unit, and Orthopedics.

PGY-III

The Third year resident will extend this training with graded responsibilities in the Emergency Department, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (William Beaumont Hospital), Toxicology (Detroit Medical Center), Cardiac Rapid Diagnostic Center, Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Elective.

PGY-IV

Rotations this year are spent in the Emergency Department, Trauma (Hurley Medical Center), and one month administrative rotation. In addition, 2 months of elective are planned to allow the resident the opportunity to explore personal academic interests. The final year of the program focuses on polishing the skills acquired to this point in the program, and increased responsibility in mentoring junior residents and house staff.

The key component to any educational program is having the perfect mix of didactics in combination with a well structured “hands on” opportunity for patient care. We feel we offer this in a supported environment which fosters the maximum opportunity for education. Our conferences are held every Thursday. The day begins at 6:00am with a special group of case reviews held for students and visiting house officers. This portion is based on groups of Emergency Medicine articles distributed at orientation. At 7:20am the EM Resident session begins. All visiting house officers and applicable EM Residents are excused from clinical duties until noon on these days.

In all years of instruction, the residents are under the constant guidance and supervision of qualified teaching faculty and senior residents. This program is designed to allow residents to develop the skills necessary to provide the highest quality emergency medical care considered to be benchmark in our profession.
